INNOVATIVE FOCUS GOAL * To prepare Dana Middle School classrooms for 21st Century Learning. "Education must move toward real-time. Kids don't understand sitting in classrooms, looking at books written 20 years ago." Dr. Larry Smarr, Director, California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, UCSD HOW * By fundraising to purchase technology tools for student classroom use (ie. computers, other hardware, online resources, etc). * By using the Project Lightspeed model and the PLCC strategic plan to transform education. (www.ibrary.com, www.pointlomacluster.com) * By supporting the professional development of our school staff to learn to utilize the resources available and share/coordinate application. IMMEDIATE NEED In 2008-09, we put 62 student laptops in language arts classrooms. Teachers can reserve lab time for their classes—but availability is limited and inflexible. We have 38 computers in our Library/Media Center and a 20 computer laptop cart (Also a computer lab with limited availability—depending on the elective schedule). The science department also has one 20 laptop cart from the Bug fundraiser 2 years ago.) Also, Dana has been recognized for a Lenox pilot in a couple of classes and is waiting on a web-based math pilot to begin. The immediate need is: 1. For all Language Arts classrooms to have a 1:2 ratio for laptop computers to students. 2. Expand this ration to 1:1 in Language Arts. 3. Begin 1:2 ratios for all Social Studies classrooms. “The single most important thing we can do is to create an "engaging and empowering environment" where we transform "students having to learn" to "students wanting to learn". “ –Matt Spathas HOW DO WE GET THERE We need your help! Donate, participate in our fundraisers, every donation counts. The funds will be used THIS year, for THESE kids! _________________________________________________________________ |
